Reptiles (2-year)

Exotic and domestic5

I'm in agreement with other reviewers that the magazine does tend to focus too much on exotic species from the Galapagos Islands to Madagascar; but for the most part I found this to be tempered by many very helpful articles for the average herp owner. I have 2 boas some chameleons an iguana and a python--and I believe that "Reptiles" focus on all reptiles has given me a better understanding of my own. This isn't necessarily geared 100% toward the pet owner but more for the overall enthusiast.More detail ...

Bird Talk (1-year)

Good Beginner's Magazine3

Bird Talk is a good magazine for people new to companion birds including children. It contains solid basic information on diet housing and safety for new bird owners. The focus is on parrots though recent articles have begun to cover some finches and softbills as well. Reading this magazine for a year will be enough to help most people decide if a bird is right for them and to give people some idea of what species to select. The beautiful photography and extensive advertising for specialty products are also plusses.

There are three main drawbacks to Bird Talk. First the information is very basic. Those interested in in-depth information on any species won't find it here - check out books or the AFA Watchbird (the American Federation of Aviculture's magazine) for more serious information. Second as another reviewer pointed out the material is often redundant. Subscribe for two years or more and you'll feel like you're reading back issues instead of a current magazine. Finally the magazine tends NOT to cover the more difficult aspects of bird ownership in any depth. As any parrot rescue can tell you parrots (like dogs) can have some serious behavior issues if not properly socialized and cared for including screaming feather picking aggression and self-mutilation. The magazine glosses over or outright ignores the more difficult side of parrot ownership which is unfortunate especially since so many up-and-coming bird owners rely on it for information.More detail ...

Birds & Blooms

I love this magazine!5

Very colorful photos informative articles written by subscribers and bird watching nuts like me! Tips on feeding birds gardening etc. Extremely informative magazine. Not a page of it wasted. There's as much info in the magazine on "birds" as there is on "blooms" so regardless of your interest you'll enjoy the publication. I look forward to it every other (bimonthly publication) month and have gleaned a lot of tips on attracting feeding and identifying birds as well as planting tips for flowers.More detail ...

The Bark

The New Yorker for people who live with dogs5

Bark is not a how-to-care-for-your-dog magazine. It's a magazine about living with dogs. It has fascinating articles about the lives of dogs and people with dogs. It has history of dogs and poems about dogs and interviews with dog trainers and sheep herders and canine rescue squads ... If you want the latest pet grooming tricks you won't find it here but if you want insight into what dogs mean to people and what people mean to dogs this is your magazine. Charming touching smart and simply wonderful.More detail ...

Cat Fancy (1-year)

A little disappointing3

I received a subscription of Cat Fancy as a gift from a friend who knows I'm a cat lover. More often than not though I find myself disappointed with the magazine especially after I've finished reading it. The magazine mainly consists of a heartwarming story or two a page of new products for cats or cat lovers a breed profile and a couple feature stories about selected topics (e.g. kittens older cats some medical condition). About a quarter of the magazine is comprised of ads for breeders.

Most of the time the articles don't relate to my cats and when I do see something interesting the article turns out to be pretty vague. For example there was an article on alternative/natural cat litters. The article listed a few different types of litter but there was no information on the benefits or drawbacks of each kind. The gist of the article was pretty much: X Y and Z are different litters look them up and see what's best for you. Most of the information in the magazine is either too general or too specific. I won't be renewing my subscription but I would probably buy off the newsstand if I saw an article that applied to my cats.

As a cat magazine it's OK but compared to magazines in general it's not that great.More detail ...

Horse Illustrated (1-year)

Faithful Subscriber No More2

I have been a subscriber to Horse Illustrated for many years and have always praised it. The magazine was originally published with well written and thoughtful articles that covered both Western and English ridding general horse care and gave very helpful tips. But within the past couple of years the quality of the publication has gone downhill.

Not only has the magazine thinned out but the articles have become biased and poorly written. Adds and articles promoting a single product occupy more of the magazine than ever before and the shift from a well rounded equine magazine to 'snob mag' is quite clear. The majority of the magazine is now aimed towards the English rider with an eye for fashion. What where once helpful tips have now become one sided suggestions.

This magazine would be a welcome addition for a horse-crazy teen who is more likely to have a new car than a horse. But if you are looking for something with a bit more substance advice and general tips this is not the magazine for you.More detail ...

Dog Fancy (1-year)

Terrific Magazine for the Dog Lover5

I have been getting this magazine since 1986 and enjoy every issue. It is always packed full of useful information on dogs. It not only covers the purebred dogs but mixed breeds as well. Each month there is at least one featured breed of dog and a poster to accompany it. It also includes advertisement for "doggy" things breeders ads and AKC show schedules.More detail ...

Young Rider (2-year)

Show your Welsh Pony every weekend? This is your magazine.3

I received a subscription of this magazine for one year and although it has its good points there were enough bad points to cause me not to renew. The magazine has tons of beautiful full color posters of beautiful horses and ponies. I really enjoyed the quizzes and short stories as well as some of the features. But my problem with this magazine was that it seems to lean towards the well-to-do little girls riding Welsh Ponies that are trained to show every weekend. I haven't read an issue yet that didn't contain an article about 'winning lots of ribbons in shows.' There is no focus on the other side of horsemanship: caring for your horse keeping up your stable and health care. It is simply assumed the 'young riders' will hand their lovely ponies away to their grooms and saunter off to hang their ribbons on the walls of their bedrooms which will presumably also have the mega posters featured in each issue of the magazine.More detail ...

Apex Ultra Pill Splitter

Works for some pills but could be improved.3

This product works best if you're cutting a hard medium- or large-sized round pill in half. It keeps the pill in place with a rubber grip while you're cutting it and then neatly contains the two halves in a compartment.

However if you're cutting a pill into quarters things become more difficult. It is hard to position a pill half in the splitter so that evenly split quarters are obtained. The blade is covered by plastic which confers a blunting effect that tends to crush or chip some pills especially small or soft ones.

Despite the crushing effect of the blade's plastic cover this product is very safe. You do not need to worry about cutting your fingers on the blade while positioning a pill.

Another difficulty when using this product is cutting large oblong pills. It is difficult to position the pill so that the blade splits the pill evenly regardless of whether you are attempting to split down the long axis or the short axis. Some oblong pills do not even fit in the splitter so that they can be split down the short axis.

Finally while this product is quite useful for cutting certain kinds of pills it is a bit on the expensive side especially considering its limitations.More detail ...
